The Project
CODEL carried out a installation of the EnergyTech 201 at Eggborough Power Station, a 2,000 MW coal-fired power station in central England. The installation began on 14 January 2016 and evaluated the system’s performance for CO and O₂ monitoring on a coal mill.
Eggborough comprises of four 500 MW generating units, with each unit operating six Foster Wheeler D9 horizontal tube-ball mills.
The Challenge
Coal mills can experience rising CO concentrations during changing operating conditions, particularly during on-load and off-load periods. Eggborough already operated CO monitors at its coal mill outlets, providing an established system against which the EnergyTech 201 could be directly evaluated.
The installation therefore needed to demonstrate how accurately the EnergyTech 201 could track changes in CO while operating alongside the station’s existing monitoring equipment.
The CODEL Solution
The EnergyTech 201 sample probe was installed directly on the coal mill outlet duct, at the same location as an existing CO monitor.
This provided a direct comparison between the EnergyTech 201 and the plant’s existing system under the same operating conditions. CODEL’s remote data logger recorded CO, O₂, relative humidity and pressure, while CO measurements could also be compared against data recorded by the power station’s DCS.
EnergyTech 201 trend data from Codel remote data logger: 12th to 16th February. CO – Black line, O2 – Green, Relative Humidity – Blue and Pressure – Yellow.
The Results
The CO measurements from the EnergyTech 201 showed excellent correlation with the station’s existing CO monitor.
The system responded effectively during mill on-load and off-load periods, when there was greater potential for CO levels to rise. The station’s E,C & I Maintenance Engineer also reported that minimal/no maintenance was required during operation due to the EnergyTech 201’s built-in self/back-purging facility.
The equipment remained installed until the permanent closure of Eggborough Power Station. Following the successful installation, the same EnergyTech 201 system was supplied a second EDF Plant in Poland.
CO trend data from Power Plant DCS: 12th to 16th February. Yellow trend – CODEL EnergyTech 201 mill outlet, Blue trend – CO gas monitor mill outlet, Green trend – CO monitor mill inlet.
