What is the GCEM40 Series used for?

The GCEM40 Series is an in-situ flue gas analyser designed for both continuous emissions monitoring and process control. It can measure gases including CO, NO, NO₂, NOx, SO₂, CH₄, HCl, CO₂ and H₂O, depending on configuration.

How does the GCEM40 measure gas emissions?

The GCEM40 uses infrared absorption spectroscopy to measure gases directly within the flue. Because the measurement takes place in-situ, the system avoids the need to extract a gas sample to a separate analyser.

What does “in-situ” gas analysis mean?

In-situ analysis means the analyser measures the gas directly at the measurement point, rather than extracting a sample and transporting it to a remote analyser.

This can simplify the monitoring system by removing sample transportation and conditioning equipment and can be particularly advantageous for applications with high dust, moisture or challenging flue-gas conditions.

Which gases can the GCEM40 measure?

Depending on the configuration, the GCEM40 can measure:

  • CO
  • NO
  • NO₂
  • NOx
  • SO₂
  • CH₄
  • HCl
  • CO₂
  • H₂O

Gas temperature and pressure can also be measured to support normalised emissions data.

Can the GCEM40 operate in high-dust environments?

Yes. The GCEM40 is designed for demanding combustion and process applications, and CODEL also offers a dedicated GCEM40 High Dust configuration. This version is designed to handle particularly challenging particulate conditions and can operate with dust loads up to 10 g/m³ according to the current product specification.

For applications with very high dust loading, the High Dust configuration would be the version I’d direct customers towards rather than making the standard GCEM40 sound universally suitable.

What are the advantages of in-situ gas monitoring?

The main advantage is simplicity. Because the analyser measures directly in the flue, an in-situ system can avoid many of the components associated with extractive systems, such as sample lines, pumps, dryers and coolers.

This can reduce maintenance requirements and eliminate potential problems associated with sample transport, condensation or sample-line blockages.

CODEL’s own application material highlights these advantages particularly for hot, dusty processes where extractive sampling can be vulnerable to blockages and condensation.

Does the GCEM40 require a sample conditioning system?

No. As an in-situ analyser, the GCEM40 measures directly within the flue gas rather than extracting a sample to a remote conditioning system.

This is one of the key differences between the GCEM40 and an extractive analyser such as the GCEM 50E.

Is the GCEM40 QAL1 certified?

The GCEM40 Series is certified to EN 15267, with certified ranges of 0–500 ppm and 0–1,000 ppm for CO, NO and SO₂. CODEL also identifies the GCEM40 as having TÜV and MCERTS certification.

Can the GCEM40 be used as part of a CEMS?

Yes. The GCEM40 can operate as a standalone analyser or form part of an integrated Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS). It provides configurable analogue outputs, alarm/data-valid contacts and RS485 Modbus communications for integration with plant control and data acquisition systems.

Is the GCEM40 suitable for US EPA applications?

Yes. The GCEM40 can be configured to satisfy a number of US EPA Performance Specifications for continuous gas emissions monitoring. CODEL identifies the GCEM40 platform for applications involving PS-2 for SO₂ and NOx, PS-3 for O₂/CO₂, PS-4A for CO and PS-18 for HCl, subject to the specific application and configuration.

For US projects, the applicable EPA regulatory subpart, permit conditions, performance specification and QA/QC requirements should be confirmed for the individual installation. CODEL’s US EPA guidance also notes that gas CEMS are subject to applicable requirements under 40 CFR Part 60, Appendix F.

Should I choose the GCEM40 or GCEM 50E?

The choice depends on the application.

The GCEM40 is an in-situ solution designed around straightforward, low-maintenance direct measurement. The GCEM 50E is a newer hot/wet extractive platform designed specifically for difficult applications where an extractive approach is preferred.

Factors such as flue-gas temperature, dust loading, moisture, stack construction, vibration, required gases, measurement ranges and regulatory requirements should be considered when selecting between them. CODEL can recommend the appropriate system based on the application.

What industries can use the GCEM40?

The GCEM40 is suitable for a broad range of combustion and industrial processes, including:

  • Power generation
  • Energy-from-waste
  • Incineration
  • Cement manufacturing
  • Glass manufacturing
  • Steel and metals processing
  • Chemical plants
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing
  • FGD systems
  • SCR and SNCR systems
  • Crematorios
  • Renewable energy
