Dust Monitor Overview

The DCEM2100 dust monitor provides a continuous measurement of opacity or dust concentration in flue gases by continuously measuring the transmissivity of visible light across a process duct or stack.

 

Its dual-pass optical arrangement is based on twin transmissometers measuring in opposing directions through the same section of the gas stream, providing not only an accurate average of the dust loading, but also providing a unique dynamic assessment of any misalignment errors due to stack movement.

What is the DCEM2100 used for?

The DCEM2100 is a continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) dust and opacity monitor designed to measure particulate emissions in flue gases. It continuously measures the transmissivity of visible light across a stack or process duct and can provide measurements in % opacity, mg/m³ or mg/Nm³.

How does the DCEM2100 measure dust and opacity?

The DCEM2100 uses an optical transmissometer to measure how much visible light is transmitted across the flue gas. Changes in light transmission are used to determine opacity and, when calibrated against an appropriate reference measurement, dust concentration.

What is a dual-pass opacity monitor?

A dual-pass opacity monitor uses two transmissometers measuring through the same section of the stack in opposing directions. The DCEM2100 uses this arrangement to improve measurement reliability and provide a dynamic assessment of potential misalignment caused by stack movement.

Why is dual-pass measurement better than single-pass?

A key advantage is the ability to identify measurement errors caused by changes in optical alignment. Stack movement, vibration or thermal effects can affect conventional optical systems; the DCEM2100’s opposing measurement paths allow the system to detect and compensate for dynamic misalignment effects.

Can the DCEM2100 measure both opacity and dust concentration?

Yes. The DCEM2100 can provide measurements in % opacity, mg/m³ or mg/Nm³, depending on the configuration and application. When dust concentration is required, the opacity measurement needs to be appropriately calibrated against a recognised reference method for the specific installation.

How accurate is the DCEM2100?

The specified accuracy of the DCEM2100 is ±0.2% opacity. The actual suitability for a particular dust concentration range depends on factors including stack geometry, path length and the characteristics of the particulate being measured.

Does the DCEM2100 require regular lens cleaning?

The system incorporates high-efficiency air curtains to help protect the optical surfaces from contamination. It also performs an integral contamination check, helping maintain reliable operation and identify when attention may be required.

How does the DCEM2100 check for contamination and measurement problems?

The DCEM2100 incorporates automatic zero and span checks, contamination monitoring and dynamic misalignment checking. These features help identify conditions that could affect measurement performance without relying solely on manual inspection.

Can the DCEM2100 be used to monitor FGD emissions?

Yes. The DCEM2100 is listed for FGD process applications and can provide continuous opacity or dust measurement to help monitor particulate emissions and the performance of emissions-control processes.

Can the DCEM2100 be integrated with existing monitoring systems?

Yes. The monitor provides two configurable isolated 4–20 mA outputs, configurable alarm and data-valid contacts, with RS232/RS485 Modbus available for serial communications. This allows the DCEM2100 to be integrated with plant control systems, data acquisition systems and wider CEMS installations.

Is the DCEM2100 suitable for US EPA applications?

Yes. The DCEM2100 can be configured to satisfy US EPA Performance Specification 11 (PS-11) for particulate matter CEMS. PS-11 applies to continuous particulate matter monitoring systems at stationary sources. The exact requirements depend on the applicable US EPA regulation, permit and application, so the appropriate configuration should be confirmed with CODEL for each project.

What is the difference between opacity monitoring and dust concentration monitoring?

Opacity measures the reduction in visible light transmission through the flue gas. Dust concentration expresses particulate loading as a mass concentration, such as mg/m³ or mg/Nm³.

An optical opacity monitor can be used to derive dust concentration, but the relationship between opacity and particulate mass depends on the characteristics of the emissions and the installation. Dust concentration applications therefore require appropriate calibration against a reference method.
